Savard steps down from Oil Kings job Monday: June 22, 2009
16-year-old
Robert Rund Jr. made a few
Los Angeles headlines during this past week as the rookie
shortstop proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school
idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and American
League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week
honors for his effort.
Gilmore
Punishes CL Pitchers This WeekMonday, June 22nd, 2009: Brant Gilmore burst onto the Canadian League stage in a big way last week. This promising rookie first baseman for Seattle garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy. The 25-year-old haunted opposing pitchers hitting .613 (19-31) with 4 home runs and 20 RBIs last week. Presently Gilmore is hitting .283 with 18 home runs and 56 RBIs. He has played in 62 games and scored 44 times.
In an announcement today, the league informed
Alex Rodriguez of
Regina and
Don Drysdale of
Calgary that they both had been suspended 8 games for fighting
in a recent game.
Toronto shortstop
Nap Lajoie knew his hitting streak would end sooner or later. He
just would have preferred later. Lajoie went 0-for-4 today in the
Bloodhounds 4-2 victory over the
Montreal Boars, snapping his 23-game hit streak.
What a day for
Heinie Manush of the
Los Angeles Knights! A 5-hit hitting spree! That doesn't happen
every day! He ripped
Las Vegas pitching apart at Knights Ballpark and sparked the
Knights to a 5-4 victory. He wrote his name in the record books,
finishing his special day 5 for 5.
Kun
Keeps Hit Streak AliveSaturday, June 20th, 2009: Texans first baseman Jing-bo Kun is really on a roll. In today's game at Roadrunners Ballpark he came up with 1 hit in 4 at-bats and extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 20 games. But the St. Louis Roadrunners came up winners on the scoreboard and topped Dallas 6-5. J. Kun grounded out in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off T. Seaver in the 6th and flied out in the 8th. A look at his current stats shows Kun with a .297 average, 13 home runs, 52 RBIs and 40 runs scored. He has played in 68 games. Raiders
Helton Falls IllSaturday, June 20th, 2009: Regina team doctors ordered ailing first baseman Todd Helton to take some time off and deal with his nagging illness. He has been suffering several days with a viral infection and might not be available to play for about 2 days. This season Helton has banged out 65 hits in 206 at-bats for a .316 average with 10 home runs. He is getting on base at a .380 pace and his totals also include 48 RBIs and 38 runs scored. Texans
Don Jr. Raps 3 HomersFriday, June 19th, 2009: Robert Don Jr. of the Texans went on a hitting spree at Roadrunners Ballpark today and earned membership in the select club of hitters who have hit three home runs in a game. He blasted three into the stands in a 11-4 loss to the St. Louis Roadrunners. Don Jr. got his name in the league record book, but failed to win the game. The Dallas catcher had quite a game as he collected 3 hits in 4 at-bats, 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs. His teammates were saddened by the loss, saying Don Jr. more than did his part, but they didn't do theirs. After his three-home run game he said this to the press: "I'm not happy with the outcome of the game, but it was still a great game for me. I have been making solid contact lately, but not getting any lift. Today I got it up in the air and out of the ballpark. I had my home run swing down pat. Got some good pitches to hit, too." R. Don Jr. hit a solo-shot off T. O in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off T. O in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off T. O in the 8th. For the year Don Jr. is batting .325 with 13 home runs, 58 RBIs and 66 runs scored. Red
Deer Blanked by Calhoun Jr.Friday, June 19th, 2009: Jordan Calhoun Jr. of the Saskatoon Legends was one tough customer on the hill today. He blanked the Red Deer Buckeyes 2-0 on 6 hits, registering 7 strikeouts and 1 walk. "When he's on, he's tough to hit," said the Red Deer manager after the game. "He's just a bulldog out there." Calhoun Jr. has posted a 10-3 record for the year with a 2.90 ERA. Teams are hitting .250 against him and he has rung up 145 strikeouts in 133.2 innings. Trade
Rumors Flying in New YorkFriday, June 19th, 2009: "Don't believe everything you hear" was the word from the team's ownership group after rumors of Roberto Ramírez wanting out of New York surfaced late yesterday. No one knows exactly how this news broke and Ramírez laughed it off when told of the story.

Suspends Giants Ojeda 4 GamesWednesday, June 17th, 2009: Ricardo Ojeda was suspended for 4 games by the commissioner's office today after he was ejected in the San Francisco-Saskatoon yesterday at San Fransisco Grounds for arguing a called third strike. "I was disciplined for making contact with an umpire and spraying him," the Giants left fielder told BNN. "I guess I used too many words with Ps and Ss." Looking at his season stats, Ojeda has compiled a .243 batting average and a .329 on-base percentage, while hitting no home runs and driving in 12 runs. Musial
on Fire, 5-6 Against Las VegasWednesday, June 17th, 2009: Players get multi-hit games all the time. But a 5-hit game only comes around once in a blue moon. It happened at Gamblers Ballpark when Stan Musial of Seattle scattered 5 hits all over the ballpark against the Las Vegas Gamblers. He walloped 5 hits in 6 at-bats in his career-day performance to help the Pilots get by the Gamblers 21-4. In a talkative and jovial mood after the game, the left fielder of the Pilots said, "Whoa, my swing was really, really there today. I made some good, sweet-spot contact and when that happens... good things happen... like 5-6. I could get used to a lot of days like this one." S. Musial grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off J. Garland in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, walked in the 7th and singled in the 9th. For the year Musial is hitting .371 with 11 home runs. His stats include 57 RBI and 47 runs scored.
The hot bat of Bloodhounds shortstop
Nap Lajoie continues to churn out hit after hit, game after
game. His consecutive-game hitting streak now numbers 20 games after
he went 2-for-4 in today's 5-4 loss to the Texans at Drillers
Ballpark.
Injuries are something every team has to deal
with. That fact struck home for the Legends when after today's game
against the Giants, the club found out they would be without the
services of
Ty Cobb for at least one week. After the game, his manager said
of the incident, "You hate to lose anyone to injury. That's always a
negative." Cobb was injured earlier today running the bases and
suffered knee inflammation.
Baseball can be a contact sport at times. It can
exact a harsh toll on a player's body. In a recent game against
Winnipeg Bombers, Knights second baseman
José Hernández was injured running the bases and is expected to
miss 7 weeks with an oblique strain. The team did not announce any
roster moves today related to this injury. The
Los Angeles skipper told BNN that personnel decisions would be
announced as early as tomorrow.
New York left fielder
Juan Miranda sensed he was going to have a good game at the
plate, but he underestimated just a little bit. Prior to the game,
Miranda predicted he would hit a home run against the
Vancouver Mob.
The injury bug struck
Dutch Leonard of the Admirals today in the game against Raiders.
The 22-year-old starting pitcher was hurt while throwing a pitch and
will miss 6 months with a torn rotator cuff.
Newspapers in Las Vegas and Yokohama reported that the Gamblers have reached a deal sending 22-year-old minor league reliever Bruce Crawford, 19-year-old minor league starting pitcher Wesley Fyfe, 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Robert Hyde, 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Enrique Carrillo, 25-year-old minor league reliever Javier Vélez and 26-year-old minor league first baseman Pirthee Raghunandan to the BayStars for 26-year-old left fielder Freddy Gonzáles.

Trade Ríos to Swallows for SamurakamiMonday, June 15th, 2009: The Gamblers and Swallows announced a deal that was completed today. Las Vegas sent 30-year-old third baseman Jesús Ríos, 25-year-old minor league catcher Scott Fleming, 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Jesús Alaniz and $5,000,000 in cash to Tokyo for 20-year-old starting pitcher Toyozo Samurakami. Both teams appear happy with the outcome of the trade. The general managers told the Baseball News Network they felt the swap was beneficial for the both teams and the players. Presently Ríos is batting .335 with 72 hits and 5 home runs. He has knocked in 30 runs and scored 32 times.
Fans in Las Vegas woke up this morning to learn that their team had traded 20-year-old minor league shortstop Juan Figueroa and $7,500,000 in cash to the Tohoku Golden Eagles. In return, the Gamblers will receive 24-year-old reliever Shigekazu Watanabe.
Las Vegas Gamblers Ship Furukawa to Hanshin Monday, June 15th, 2009: The Las Vegas Gamblers swapped 27-year-old minor league catcher Pedro Morales, 25-year-old minor league starting pitcher Jacob Ouimet, 25-year-old minor league left fielder Mario Chouinard, 26-year-old minor league catcher Eiichi Furukawa, 26-year-old minor league reliever Jorge Oscal, 25-year-old minor league starting pitcher Frank Davis and $3,000,000 in cash for 26-year-old reliever Cataldo Bembo of the Tigers after what Hanshin officials would only characterize as "difficult" negotiations.
